The Photo Big Year: Block 1/2

After twelve months of birding harder than I ever have before (but admittedly not as hard as some), the journey is complete. My Photo Big Year across New York State ended with 235 species, from a Snowy Egret just outside of NYC to Boreal Chickadees in the Adirondacks.

Two weeks into this new year I’ve just finished formatting a huge photobook for myself so I can look back on this experience with style. However, so many people who might never get the chance to see the physical book played a part in this Big Year, or might even just be curious to see what I’ve been up to for the last year. As such, I threw no less than the whole photobook onto this website for all to see. In fact, it’s more than the whole photobook, because on this website I’ve also included the occasional video I took, as those don’t work quite as well in book format. Hopefully this is an enjoyable format for everyone, and thanks for checking it out!

P.S. Unfortunately, the images are slightly reduced quality on the website. I’ve uploaded this in two posts for easier viewing and loading times, but the videos can still be a little janky, so try going into full screen and letting it load for a few seconds. Hopefully it doesn’t impact enjoyability too much 🙂

A phone video of the feeder above. Featured in this view are several Dark-Eyed Juncos, a pair of Northern Cardinals, a Black-Capped Chickadee, a Downy Woodpecker, and a White-Throated Sparrow (finding that one is the challenge level)

White-Breasted Nuthatches and Black-Capped Chickadees clamor for seeds from my hand at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve

Quickie, but hopefully it gives you some idea of what a small portion of the geese we saw looks like

I love the little dance Louisiana Waterthrushes always seem to be doing

This brings us to just about half the birds and half the year! Continue on to the Block 2 post to see the rest!
